In memory of my brother, David Kanko, who will be forever held inside of my heart.

My Why

David and I grew up in Beachwood, New Jersey, just three blocks away from the Beachwood Volunteer Fire Department. On Friday nights, when the Fire Department performed their siren tests, we would hear them, loud and clear! As soon as David could speak, his first words were “I want to be a Fireman.” And that became his Journey.

While serving with the Beachwood Vol. FD, David joined McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Joint Base Fire Department as a career firefighter, and in 2021 had been promoted to the rank of Captain. After moving from Beachwood, he also became a member of the Stafford Township Volunteer Fire Department.  When David made a commitment, it was never broken.

My brother loved helping others and was dedicated to his career, to his family, and to his many friends. He was generous, dependable, humorous, and a little sarcastic, in that classic Jersey way.

Shift after shift, decade after decade, the overwhelming stress and trauma of David’s chosen profession continued to accumulate inside of him.  For over 51 years, he suffered in silence, unbeknownst to everyone that knew and loved him.  And on January 21, 2022, all of his suffering tragically made itself known, and David’s Earth journey had ended.

My brothers Earth journey has guided me towards my own path, to my commitment of providing First Responders a healthy way of managing their stress, balancing their internal energy, and staying in the present moment.
